NuKorc reduces its carbon emissions even further
NuKorc’s packaging breakthrough is helping the South Australian-based company to shrink its carbon footprint.
The producer of new technology synthetic wine bottle closures is serious about meeting its corporate climate change obligations and a comprehensive rethink on packaging is helping it achieve this.
The new approach helps export the product in a more environmentally responsible way by cutting down the amount of packaging used and the number of shipping containers it relies on to move its product overseas.
“Because the new packaging fits into the shipping containers in a more effective manner, we have cut the number of containers we require by 25 per cent,” NuKorc’s Production Manager Ingo Jerke says.
“This decrease in containers also means fewer trucks from NuKorc to the docks, less paperwork and fewer pallets”
From 1990 to 2005, international maritime carbon emissions jumped 52.9 per cent, according to Australian Government figures, and as at January 2007 there were 60,000 ships in world trade. This figure is set to jump by 11 per cent by 2020.
NuKorc is hoping to buck the trend, identifying the logistics area of its business as a key means of cutting carbon emissions.
This initiative is one of many NuKorc has undertaken to reduce its carbon footprint. With its emission reductions reaching beyond 30 per cent since 2006, the company is certainly making a difference.
